Drywall planning tool

Drywall Cost Calculator

Calculate transparent rectangular-room quantities and apply prices you enter. The result is not a quote or an assembly design.

Room takeoff and local rates

Plan drywall area, sheets, and cost

Use your own scoped sheet, labor, and allowance prices. The result is not a quote and does not select an assembly.

Inside room length in feet; must be greater than zero.
Inside room width in feet; must be greater than zero.
Wall height in feet; must be greater than zero.
Adds the rectangular room ceiling area to the drywall scope.
Combined door and window wall area in square feet; cannot exceed total wall area. Enter zero for none or use 0.01 sq ft increments.
Panel width in feet; must be greater than zero.
Panel length in feet; must be greater than zero.
Waste percentage added after openings; enter zero for none or use 0.01% increments.
Low local price in dollars per sheet; zero is allowed, otherwise use whole cents.
High local price in dollars per sheet; zero is allowed, otherwise use whole cents.
Low labor rate in dollars per square foot; zero is allowed, otherwise use whole cents.
High labor rate in dollars per square foot; zero is allowed, otherwise use whole cents.
Low additional allowance in dollars; enter zero for none, otherwise use whole cents.
High additional allowance in dollars; enter zero for none, otherwise use whole cents.

Plan responsibly

Before You Build

This project may be subject to local permit, zoning, site, or structural requirements.

  • Verify fire resistanceUse the complete tested/listed fire-rated assembly where required.
  • Verify exposureUse locally accepted products for wet, damp, mold, flood, exterior, or other exposure.
  • Verify fasteningConfirm framing, backing, orientation, fastening, joints, finish, manufacturer instructions, and local rules.
  • Confirm permit scopeAltered assemblies, fire separation, occupancy, and utility work may affect permits.

Entered-rate planning only: User-entered prices are not a quote.

No assembly is selected: Fire, sound, moisture, framing, finish, and exposure need project verification.

Local requirements may differ. A model-code reference does not confirm the code edition, amendments, zoning rules, or permit requirements adopted where the project is located.

Methodology

How we calculate this

Perimeter times height gives wall area; door and window openings are deducted from wall area, optional ceiling area is added, and the entered waste percentage is divided by 100 before it is applied. Whole sheets round up. Entered sheet, labor, and allowance ranges produce the total range.

sheets = ceil(((2 × (L + W) × H − openings + ceiling) × (1 + wastePercentage / 100)) ÷ sheet area)

Verify fire-rated assemblies

Where fire resistance is required, use the complete tested/listed fire-rated assembly and verify current local adoption; panel labels alone are insufficient.

Match moisture and exposure

Verify products and details for moisture, mold, wet-area, flood, exterior, or other exposure conditions; this calculator does not select a panel.

Confirm fastening and finish scope

Verify framing, backing, fastening, joints, accessories, finish level, manufacturer instructions, local code, and permit scope.

12 ft by 10 ft room

The worked example has 352 sq ft of walls, 120 sq ft of ceiling, and 16 whole 4×8 sheets after openings and waste.

Common questions

Drywall Cost Calculator FAQ

Are joint compound, tape, screws, and corner bead included?

No. Add them only from transparent manufacturer coverage and scoped local prices; this version does not infer them.

Does the sheet count optimize cuts?

No. It rounds total waste-adjusted area up by entered sheet area and does not create a panel layout.

Does this select moisture-resistant or fire-rated drywall?

No. Verify the complete assembly, exposure, panel, thickness, framing, fastening, and local requirements.

Are labor rates supplied by Plan Otter?

No. Enter a current local low/high range with a clearly matching scope.
