Fencing planning tool

Fence Cost Calculator

Measure the complete fence run and apply two comparable local rates. The result is planning arithmetic, not a quote or a market-price claim.

Local-rate planning

Apply your scoped local rates

No price is prefilled. Use comparable current quotes; this is not a market-price claim.

Plan responsibly

Before You Build

This project may be subject to local permit, zoning, site, or structural requirements.

  • Confirm the property lineUse a survey or other appropriate local evidence; this calculator does not establish ownership or boundary location.
  • Check recorded easementsReview title, survey, utility, access, and drainage information before choosing a fence alignment.
  • Request utility marksContact the applicable 811 center and follow the ticket instructions before digging.
  • Ask the local authorityPermit, height, setback, visibility, pool-barrier, and HOA rules vary; confirm requirements for the actual address.
  • Check site wind designFence height, openness, exposure, soil, hardware, post spacing, and local wind criteria can affect design; obtain project-specific guidance.

Planning range only: The result applies rates you enter and is not a contractor quote or a claim about local market pricing.

No structural dimensions selected: This tool does not choose post size, spacing, embedment, footing dimensions, or wind design.

Local requirements may differ. No project-specific model-code reference is asserted here.

Methodology

How we calculate this

The calculator multiplies total run length by each rate you enter. Gate opening is reported but not removed because whole-run contractor rates commonly need scope confirmation rather than an invented gate adjustment.

run ft × user low/high $ per ft = planning range

Use comparable local scope

Enter current low and high rates that cover the same materials, labor, gates, removal, access, tax, and permit scope.

Confirm the line before pricing

A calculator cannot establish a property boundary or easement. Check appropriate records and project-specific information before finalizing the run.

Design remains separate

Confirm local permit, height, setback, utility, soil, wind, post, footing, gate, and pool-barrier requirements. This tool selects none of them.

Worked examples

120 ft run

At user-entered rates of $25–$40/ft, the range is $3000–$4800.

Common questions

Fence Cost Calculator FAQ

Where do the rates come from?

Only from you. Use current local quotes or scoped supplier/installer estimates; Plan Otter supplies no default price.

Does the estimate include a gate?

The gate opening is reported, but the full run is priced. Confirm gate inclusion and hardware with each quote.

Is this a contractor quote?

No. It is arithmetic applied to user-entered rates and cannot account for site conditions or scope differences.

Does this determine permit or property-line rules?

No. Requirements and records vary by address and jurisdiction; verify them locally.
